Melee Mage is already viable in the Forever beta — a beta tester's deep dive
27.09.2026
A beta tester on the official EU forums proved that a Battlemage build — Frost talents paired with the Iceknife scroll on a dagger — already works in Forever, and laid out where it falls short.
A player who spent the first beta weekend farming scrolls in Deadmines stumbled onto something the developers hadn't quite planned for: a functioning Battlemage. The setup pairs Frost talents with the Iceknife scroll on a dagger and, in the author's testing, outperforms every other Frost build — though it's far from finished.
What you need
- A one-handed dagger imbued with the Scroll of Imbue Ice Knife.
- Talents: Improved Frost Nova, Frostbite and Ice Lance. In the first row you can take either Improved Frostbolt or Elemental Precision — the pick doesn't really matter.
How it plays Run into melee, swing on the global cooldown, drop Frost Nova whenever it's up and dump Ice Lance into the frozen target. On packs of 5 or more, just spam Blizzard. If aggro swings onto you, don't panic — Frost Armor keeps the build alive for a surprising amount of time and contributes extra freezes through Frostbite.
Why the Ice Knife proc is special Normal mage freezes break on the first damage instance and rarely survive even one Ice Lance. The freeze from Ice Knife lasts a flat 5 seconds and does not break on damage — that's a guaranteed two Ice Lances per proc. Empirically the trigger fires about every tenth swing, well above what talents alone give you.
A nice extra detail: instant casts (Fire Blast, Arcane Explosion, Blizzard) don't reset the swing timer, so the melee loop doesn't fall apart while you juggle casts.
Where the build falls short
- White-hit damage is poor: Strength gives mages next to nothing, so almost all the damage is carried by Ice Knife's trigger.
- Damage fluctuates wildly from pull to pull: 15 swings in a row without a proc, then three procs in three swings. Procs on near-dead targets simply evaporate.
- Some bosses are immune to freeze. This applies to Hellfire Ramparts and roughly half of Deadmines; in Wailing Caverns and Shadowfang Keep freeze works on almost every boss.
The Coldflame Saber question The much-discussed melee-proc sword almost reads like a second Ice Lance — but it's a sword, not a dagger, so Ice Knife can't be applied to it. On top of that, the saber doesn't visibly scale with spellpower, so the endgame for the archetype looks murky: either you swap weapons on every proc, or you stick with Iceknife and wait for a true melee blade.
What this means for you
- Even if you don't plan to play it at launch, Battlemage is one of the most entertaining ways to spend the rest of the beta — high APM, genuine melee risk, and a clean fallback to ranged at any moment.
- If you're scrolling: the Ice Knife page still comes from Deadmines, no other source has surfaced yet.
- Keep an eye on this thread. The Coldflame Saber situation and the Ice Knife balancing are exactly the kinds of things Blizzard tends to touch between beta phases.
