Character creation in Forever: rulesets replace servers, two-part names, and the new Skyborne race
22.09.2026On 21–22 September, Blizzard posted three character-creation guides for World of Warcraft: Forever — covering the race-and-class lineup with the new Skyborne, the two-part name system, and choosing a ruleset instead of the usual list of servers.
21–22 September saw three guides go live on the Blizzard site, all about creating characters in World of Warcraft: Forever. There are three big takeaways: instead of picking from a list of servers, players choose a ruleset; character names now have two parts; and a new race, Skyborne, has joined the lineup.
Rulesets instead of servers
Forever drops the usual list of dozens of servers. From the start, players pick a ruleset — Normal, PvP, or Roleplaying. Each ruleset lives as its own large ecosystem: its own groups, dungeons, raids, and community. A fourth option, Hardcore, is coming later — after launch.
Two-part names
In Forever, a character's name has two parts — a given name and a family name. The full combination must be unique within the region, but the given name on its own can repeat. So if 'Anduin' is already taken, you can try 'Anduin Storm' or 'Anduin Hammer' — the combination will still be free.
Races, classes, and racial traits
Blizzard refreshed the racial traits of familiar races and added new class combinations. The headline addition is the new playable race, Skyborne.
In practice
- Picking a ruleset in Forever replaces picking a server. Think not 'PvP server or PvE' but 'PvP ruleset or Normal'.
- Hardcore won't be there at launch — it arrives later, after the 4 November 2026 release.
- When creating a character, come up with the family name right away: the name won't be accepted without it.
- Skyborne are available from launch — if you want to try the new race, you won't have to wait for a patch.
