Why it works this way

In classic WoW, a character lives on a specific realm, and the name has to be free on that realm. Forever works differently: Blizzard groups players into large regions without traditional realms, so the old server-based identity stops making sense. The solution is to give every hero both a first name and a last name and treat the combination as the unique identifier. That way, multiple characters can be named "Thrall," but Thrall Doomhammer is taken only once across the entire region.

What's changing on the beta

During the closed testing phase, Blizzard has already started forcibly renaming characters whose names went outside the rules. According to a developer, these decisions are made by the development team, each on a case-by-case basis. Customer support doesn't handle these cases and doesn't accept appeals.

For names that seriously violate the Code of Conduct, a player can also lose beta access. Blizzard emphasizes: this isn't an automatic mass purge — it's targeted action against specific characters.

An automated name-control system will go live in the game shortly. Blizzard has asked testers not to try probing it — meaning, don't try out combinations that skirt the rules.
