Feral Druids in Forever: players criticize Shifting Power, Wolfshead Helm is once again best-in-slot

During the Forever open beta, Feral players are debating the Shifting Power mechanic and see it as a step back from Wrath of the Lich King design; meanwhile, in one of the patches Wolfshead Helm has returned to BiS status — according to part of the community, a sign of Blizzard's commitment to classic gameplay.

The Forever open beta has sparked a forum debate around the Feral Druid: one participant on the European Blizzard forum criticized the Shifting Power mechanic, while on r/classicwow players noticed that Wolfshead Helm once again became best-in-slot after a recent change.

Shifting Power is a mechanic that introduces a mana-for-energy trade-off for Feral. In a post on the Blizzard forum, a player puts it this way: "it simplifies and speeds up combat, but at the cost of no longer being able to use your full toolkit as a hybrid class." This refers to abilities Feral could previously use with mana — curse removal, Hibernate and Entangling Roots, and off-role healing.

The main complaint is a departure from Wrath of the Lich King design. There, energy regenerated constantly and was preserved on shifting into Cat Form after investing five points in Furor; the player saw that scheme as more methodical and demanding more attention. In their words, in Forever right now "if you wanted to think about mana while dealing damage, you'd play Balance, Enhancement Shaman, or Hunter." The author also called out Furor's behavior in Forever: shifting into Bear Form doesn't just fail to restore energy, it seems to reset it. They aren't sure whether this is a bug or an intentional restriction — and admitted they'd rather see working "bear weaving" than a return to mana-for-energy trading.

Meanwhile, on r/classicwow players noticed another patch change: Wolfshead Helm has returned to BiS status for Feral Druid. The thread author describes the Feral mood as cautious optimism after Shifting Power: Wolfshead Helm is once again best-in-slot in the latest update, and Blizzard, in their words, continues to stick with classic gameplay. From the tone of the discussion, this is read by some players as a sign that Blizzard is consciously keeping classic builds and gear relevant — not as a wholesale retreat from Shifting Power.

Both sources reflect player positions, not Blizzard statements. There's no developer response to the Shifting Power criticism on the forum yet; the Wolfshead Helm update isn't described in the patch notes in our sources, so we don't know the technical reason for the change from the patch data.

In practice

  • If you're playing Feral in the beta — it's worth trying Shifting Power firsthand and comparing the feel with the Lich King priority before sinking mana regen and gear into a build around it.
  • Furor's behavior in Bear Form (energy reset on shifting) is worth keeping an eye on: it might be an intentional restriction on "bear weaving", or it could be a bug that gets fixed in one of the upcoming updates.
  • Wolfshead Helm back in BiS is still only a community observation, but if you're gearing a Feral for raids and PvP, it makes sense to keep the helm on your watchlist and check whether it has dropped for you in beta dungeons.
  • There's no Blizzard reaction to the Shifting Power criticism in the sources: changes get announced in patch notes or blue posts, so that's where to wait for them.
