Blizzard developer calls Forever beta numbers 'the craziest in 17 years'

World of Warcraft: Forever beta gathered far more players than Blizzard expected in its first days, and the team had to deal with login queues and disconnects on the fly.

The launch of the World of Warcraft: Forever beta brought Blizzard 'the craziest' numbers in 17 years — the studio didn't expect that many players, and on day one the test infrastructure buckled.

Numbers that keep you awake

WoW Classic developer Josh Greenfield wrote on Twitter/X on September 18, 2026: 'Last night it was hard to sleep, I was so nervous. The beta is going… crazy. The craziest numbers I've seen in 17 years at Blizzard and almost 8 years on Classic.' In his words, 'we have something really special here.'

What broke on day one

Senior WoW producer Tom Ellis broke down on Twitter/X exactly what happened. According to him, the problems boiled down to three things:

  • The beta build is a PTR test environment, not production servers, and for a WoW beta this is usually not the main metric — it wasn't built to handle a load of this scale.
  • The test environment only ran a single regional realm, so the flood of players caused disconnects.
  • The login queue is a Battle.net safeguard that throttles login speed so the service doesn't go down entirely.

By the end of the day, the team managed to bring the realm back online. 'Marked as alive again, and you all flooded in without issues,' Ellis wrote. According to him, at that point 'everything was running incredibly smoothly for the first hours of a public beta.'

Context

The Forever beta runs from September 17 to October 21, 2026, with the release on November 4, 2026 at 23:00 UTC (November 5, 02:00 MSK). The surge of interest hit the first days of the open test, right after the BlizzCon announcement on September 12. Blizzard has not publicly released the actual numbers: so far there's only the developer's emotional assessment, and from a single source.

In practice

  • If you ran into a disconnect or a long queue while logging into the beta — it was a one-off day-one issue, not a permanent feature. The team closed it out within a few hours.
  • Blizzard hasn't published specific numbers — the only basis for judging the scale is the developer's words.
