Items that break WoW's classic rules found in the Forever beta

In the World of Warcraft: Forever beta client, players have discovered items that don't fit the 22-year-old logic of a classic MMO — including one that finally gives a mage a real reason to swing a sword.

The World of Warcraft: Forever beta has already produced its first find that doesn't sit inside the usual classic MMO box. Datamining the client turned up items built for scenarios that used to live only in fan fiction — like a mage with a sword in hand.

The most striking example is an item that gives a mage a real reason to hit something in melee. Blizzard seems to have added such pieces to Forever on purpose: they sit right in the client data rather than turning up among leftover old assets.

In classic WoW, a mage is a glass cannon built for ranged combat: the only weapon the class can hold is a staff (which technically counts as melee), but you couldn't actually hit anything with it — let alone swords, daggers or polearms. An item that finally gives a mage a reason to pick up a sword breaks that logic for the first time in 22 years of WoW.

The Forever beta runs from 17 September to 21 October 2026; release is set for 4 November 2026 at 23:00 UTC (02:00 Moscow time on 5 November). The discoveries are being made by players themselves as they sift through the client — Blizzard hasn't announced any of these items separately.
