Blizzard drops game realms for Forever: what changes
13.09.2026At the BlizzCon 2026 „Deep Dive" panel, Blizzard announced that Forever won't have the usual servers. Instead of realms, four rule sets share the same infrastructure, and choosing a character comes down to one question: which mode do you want to play in?
In vanilla World of Warcraft, the game world was a physical server: a separate database, a separate economy, a separate name list. That produced familiar headaches — login queues on popular realms, paid transfers, dead servers, and the inability to play with a friend who rolled on the wrong side. Forever drops that legacy: infrastructure is shared, and the split isn't by server but by rule set.
Four rule sets
- Normal — classic mode with no forced PvP.
- PvP — open skirmishes on contested territories.
- Roleplay — with name and behavior requirements.
- Hardcore — a mode where your character dies for good — launches later, in winter 2026–2027.
You can only group up inside your own rule set. Switching between rule sets isn't allowed for regular characters — otherwise the PvP mode would turn into a revolving door for loot. Factions stay separate either way: shared infrastructure doesn't mean Alliance and Horde ended up in the same pot.
Hardcore exception
A Hardcore character that dies can move into any other rule set, including PvP. The dead character isn't deleted and doesn't linger as a ghost — they simply continue playing in Normal mode. This is the only allowed switch between rule sets, and it goes one way only.
First and last name instead of a server-unique name
Previously a name had to be unique within one server — among a few thousand players. Without servers, uniqueness would have to be held across millions, and normal names would be gone within the first hour. Blizzard's solution: every character gets a first name and a last name, and it's the pair that's unique within the region. Name reservations open on October 27, 2026, a week before launch.
Language-based matchmaking
Language separation inside a region is preserved, but not through separate worlds — through a matchmaking system. Blizzard didn't clarify on the panel whether the language is set in the client settings and whether the matchmaking covers the open world or just the group finder.
What wasn't said
- Transferring characters from retail or Classic wasn't discussed — there's no explicit ban either.
- Faction balance: all we know is that parity is meant to follow the Season of Discovery model. No concrete mechanics named.
- Availability from Russia and the Russian language: Blizzard still hasn't said anything.
In practice
- At character creation you pick a mode, not a realm.
- First and last name reservations open on October 27, 2026.
- Switching to another rule set isn't allowed — except for a dead Hardcore character.
- The auction and economy are shared within a rule set, not across them.
- Language-based matchmaking runs through the matchmaking system; Blizzard promises details later.
