Round-robin quest drops in group play

Blizzard has added a mechanic that distributes quest items among party members in turn — no more lottery where one player runs off with everything.

The beta of World of Warcraft: Forever has introduced a "pro-social" mechanic: Blizzard has added round-robin distribution of quest items in groups under the hood. It's still the same as in vanilla WoW — you farm mobs, collect ten — but now one player won't take all ten and run off while the rest wait for theirs.

Lead developer Josh Greenfield talked about the new mechanic over the weekend. The idea is simple: when you're in a group, quest items are distributed predictably among members — round-robin. Greenfield himself asked players to try it in beta: farming still takes time, as in original Classic, but the gap between members should shrink, and you'll kill mobs noticeably faster in a group. Blizzard didn't change drop chances.

A related mechanic works in parallel — "recent allies". The system remembers who you've grouped with, then nudges those players into your layer when you zone into the same area again. Their names show up highlighted in a different color — so you immediately see a familiar face nearby and can team up again. The devs call this a "pro-social" feature: instead of a lottery that throws random companions your way each time, the system helps you reconnect with people you've already worked well with.

This is a reaction to a post by a player on the Blizzard forum at the start of the beta: he was worried that in the first weeks after launch, starting zones would pack in two hundred people, and at a 5–10% drop chance per mob there would be tag fights and toxic behavior. Blizzard didn't bump the chance — but honestly leveled out the distribution. Some players miss the old randomness — when a kind helper who delivered the last tail to you became a memorable encounter.

Meanwhile, Blizzard raised the player cap on beta servers again. Executive producer Holly Longdale briefly commented on the ongoing influx of players.
