Quest loot in Forever groups is handed out in turn — with bad-luck protection

Senior Blizzard game designer Josh Greenfield explained: in Forever, quest trophies in a group no longer drop randomly on every player — the game hands them out in turn, and laggards get help from Bad Luck Protection. The grind element of quests itself remains.

Why it matters to the player

In World of Warcraft: Forever, quest trophies in a group no longer drop randomly for each player. Senior Blizzard game designer Josh Greenfield explained that under the hood the game hands them out in turn among group members, and if someone falls significantly behind, "bad-luck protection" (Bad Luck Protection) kicks in. The grind itself stays, but the classic situation of "one player has 8 of 10, another has 1" should become much rarer.

What changed compared to Classic

The spread between players in a group used to be harsh: one player would have 8 of 10, another only 1 — such imbalances, according to Greenfield, should become much rarer. In Forever, the project team has deliberately moved away from the random "how it was in Classic" distribution.

How it works

  • The game keeps a hidden list of what each group member has received and hands out drops in turn.
  • If someone is still falling behind, Bad Luck Protection kicks in: their chance of getting the needed trophy rises.
  • The grind itself isn't cancelled — according to Greenfield, the grind element of quests is kept deliberately. The new mechanic only smooths out the spread between players.
  • The system is still being finished: Greenfield clarified that it's still being tuned, so specific behavior may still change.

In practice

  • If you're playing in a group with friends on quests — you no longer have to wait long for the needed item to drop: laggards will be helped faster.
  • If you prefer solo play — nothing changes for you: the mechanic only works in groups, and a solo player gets their trophies on their own.
  • This doesn't extend to dungeon and raid gear: the usual drop rules apply there, nothing new has been announced.
