Modern graphics don't clash with the spirit of WoW: Forever — a player's breakdown

A post on the Blizzard forum for WoW: Forever separates two ideas that constantly get mixed up in graphics debates: Warcraft's visual style and the technical level of rendering. In the author's view, they're different things — and Forever can look modern without losing the original's aesthetic.

What actually makes Warcraft recognizable

The author lists what he sees as Warcraft's visual language: recognizable silhouettes, exaggerated proportions, oversized roofs and beams, massive pauldrons, hand-painted textures, and a shared design code. Polygon count and texture resolution aren't on that list. The hardware limits of the mid-2000s did shape how WoW looked, but "constraints helped shape the style" isn't the same as "constraints are the style and must be preserved forever."

As an illustration, he picks the classic human tavern and its modern version. The updated model keeps the same silhouette, the same oversized roof, and the same chunky wooden beams — the artist just got more geometry to work with. The building didn't turn into a realistic mansion à la The Witcher 3: it's the same Warcraft tavern, just with more detail.

Art direction, not hardware

The author takes a separate swing at the argument that "Warcraft will become cartoony or turn into a realistic RPG." Warcraft was stylized long before Classic — Warcraft III is proof enough. Its Reforged version moved toward realism, modern WoW at a comparable technical level went the other way, and that was an art direction call, not a technology outcome. More geometry doesn't cancel out the big shapes: an oversized roof stays oversized, a warrior's pauldron stays a warrior's pauldron, even when the relief is now sculpted in 3D rather than painted on a texture.

What this means for Forever

The author hedges: not every visual choice in retail sits right with him — some models and zones really have moved away from the early game's look. But that's about artists' choices, not about high detail being fundamentally incompatible with Classic. Classic already exists as a "museum" of the original WoW — Forever can take a different path and answer the question of "what would this world look like if it were drawn today, following the same artistic principles, but without the twenty-year-old hardware limits."

Right around this point the author gets to a specific grievance: the swap of the Chol'aruk model caught him off guard, and he wonders why Forever even needs an HD/SD toggle if the SD versions are still being changed. The argument jumped to Reddit immediately: r/wowforever discusses how the gnome's SD model looks "cute" next to what HD players see. Over in r/classicwow, meanwhile, the complaint is technical: bloom is eye-searing even on minimum settings — a different conversation, not about art direction but about graphics settings, and it shows that the debate over what Forever should look like is bigger than any single thesis.
