Hall of Thanes: The First New Alliance Dungeon in WoW: Forever

The Forever beta has opened a new level 13-18 dungeon hidden beneath Ironforge — a five-quest chain, four bosses, and a set of notable rewards for early leveling.

The World of Warcraft: Forever beta has already shown players the first entirely new dungeon of the Classic+ branch — Hall of Thanes. The dungeon is designed for levels 13-18 and sits in Ironforge, in the open section of Old Ironforge beneath the Throne Room — that very zone that was previously locked off.

In terms of content it's a proper Classic-tier dungeon: five quests, four bosses, and a set of rewards. Horde players can enter as well, but the quests are Alliance-only — the Horde won't receive them, and a run will turn into a regular clear with diminished payoff.

Dungeon quests

There are five quests in Hall of Thanes, and they're tied together in a single chain. According to the source, two quests are handed out outside the dungeon, two are found inside, and the last one starts in Dun Morogh — though the source doesn't specify which quests belong to which group.

The chain begins with A Visitor to Dun Morogh, picked up from Beldin Steelgrill in Steelgrill Depot. After completing it, the player receives a Dark Iron dwarf map from a Dark Iron dwarf — this is the pass into the dungeon.

Among the quest rewards there is gear that noticeably speeds up early leveling: the two-handed weapon Ironforge Greathammer for "Old Ironforge Incursion", the wand Deepblaze for the same quest, the off-hand Dwarven Tome for "Important Heirlooms", and the cloak Catacomb Cloak for "An Ancient Grudge". The final boss additionally drops the one-handed axe Durgen's Crescent Axe — one of the dungeon's most notable rewards.

Hall of Thanes bosses

There are four bosses in the dungeon. By difficulty they're more on the moderate side, but the trash packs nearby hit hard — it's best not to try entering with a group without crowd control.

Faldrim Anvilma, undead. Not very tough, but applies an annoying debuff on the tank — clear the trash around before the pull.
Magmatus, elemental. Kill the summoned add first; the tank holds the boss away from the group to soften AoE damage.
Plunder, elemental. Heavy knockback — watch out that nobody gets pushed into a nearby trash pack.
Durgen Dirgehammer, humanoid. Uses fear — clear trash around the edges of the room, don't touch the golems or the boss will pull immediately. Handy tip: if the group is heading for a wipe, it's better to take the golem down in advance — the next pull becomes noticeably easier.

The trash in the dungeon hits noticeably harder than you'd expect from dungeons of the same level — without crowd control, packs closer to the final boss can be too much for a group, especially at the lower end of the level range. Overall that's more of a plus: the dungeon stays a challenge rather than autopilot practice.

What this means for you

If you play Alliance, this is the first dungeon you'll encounter story-wise in World of Warcraft: Forever. It's worth bringing a full five-person group for the quests and a couple of items useful at the start of leveling. The Horde has little reason to enter: you can't pick up the quests, and there's no point going just for experience.
