Blizzard released a detailed guide to the Legacy system — Forever's main account-wide progression. We break down how to unlock it, what the 65 challenges and three perk trees give you, and which cosmetic rewards await players at launch.

The Legacy system in World of Warcraft: Forever unlocks after a player earns their first Legacy point. The easiest ways to get one are leveling a single character to 25, raising a primary non-gathering profession to 150, or fully exploring the world map. After that, a Legacy icon shaped like a shield appears on screen — open the window with the Y key.

What 65 challenges give you

There are 65 Legacy Challenges in total, split across six categories. Each completed challenge grants one Legacy Point, and these points are shared across the entire Battle.net account — any character can spend them, except those playing Hardcore.

  • Classes — 27 points: bring each class to levels 25, 45, and 60.
  • Professions — 18 points: raise each primary non-gathering profession to skill levels 150, 225, and 300.
  • PvP — 12 points: reach ranks 3, 7, 10, 13, and 14, earn "Exalted" with all Battleground factions, and complete weeks 4, 7, and 10 of the seasonal "Field of Honor" journey.
  • Adventures — 2 points: fully reveal the world map with a single character, and complete Lord Val'thalak's quest chain in the dungeon.
  • Dungeons — 3 points: clear the final bosses in all dungeons across level bands 15–25, 26–45, and 46–60.
  • Raids — 3 points: defeat Onyxia, all 13 bosses in Hyjal Summit, and all 8 bosses in Barrow Deeps.

Three perk trees and the per-character cap

Each character spends their own Legacy points — across three trees: Professions, Adventure, and Resourcefulness. At launch, a single character can spend no more than 16 points. That's enough to build a specialization for a particular playstyle, while keeping new players from falling behind forever.

You can spend all 16 points on a single character: up to 3 from leveling, up to 6 from professions, up to 12 from PvP, 2 from adventures, and up to 6 from dungeons and raids — for a total of up to 29 available points without rolling an alt.

The perks themselves span many sides of the game. In Professions: "Overtime Work" increases the chance to gain a skill point in all professions, "Bountiful Harvest" raises the chance to find rare gathering nodes, "Haggler" lowers vendor prices, "Master Chef" gives a chance for an extra result from cooking, and "Merchant's Bonus" occasionally grants more of the "Merchant Favor" currency from the Azeroth Commerce Guild (Alliance) and Durotar Logistics (Horde). Adventure: "Well Rested" expands the rested XP cap and speeds up its accumulation, "Adventurer's Spirit" restores health and mana on nontrivial kills, "Field Manual" reduces the hourly cooldown for setting up Camping objects, and "Talent" lets you unlock talents 5 levels earlier than normal. Resourcefulness: "Gourmand" extends food buffs, "Quicker Than the Dead" speeds corpse runs and makes party resurrection buffs free, "Diplomat" increases reputation gains, and "Reagent Conservation" removes the need to buy reagents for class abilities.

Account-wide rewards

Beyond perks, Legacy points pile up across your whole Battle.net and unlock toys and cosmetics. At launch, four rewards are available:

  • Replica of the Steelgrinder Rifle — a toy rifle you can use for shootouts with other players: it stuns the target and tracks hits.
  • Spectral Bear Cub — a bear cub companion, inspired by the gnome hunter and his companion from the Forever cinematic.
  • Spectral Bear Tabard — a tabard featuring the same spectral bear.
  • Reins of the Spectral Bear — a mount shaped like that same spectral bear.

Hardcore rules

Hardcore won't be live at launch, but Blizzard has already outlined its rules. Challenges completed outside Hardcore don't count toward Hardcore progress — but those completed on Hardcore count for every other mode. PvP challenges aren't available in Hardcore, so 12 separate challenges specific to that mode will be added when it launches.

What's next

Blizzard call the system "early in its journey": every new content update will bring new Legacy Challenges, perks (for now, in existing trees), and over time — new trees, dedicated challenges and perks for Hardcore, and an expanding list of Legacy Rewards with more toys and cosmetics.

In practice

  • Want to unlock Legacy fast: level one character to 25 — it's the most direct path to your first point.
  • Not planning to play alts: 16 perk points are available to one character, and up to 29 points can be collected without a second.
  • Looking to specialize a character for one role: pick perks from one or two trees — the 16-point cap forces you to choose.
  • Going into PvP: 12 points come from the combat side — the fastest track for players who spend their time in Battlegrounds.
  • Waiting for Hardcore: challenges don't carry over from normal mode, but Hardcore progress does carry over to everything else.
