A new talent has been added in the fourth tier of the Feral Combat tree: Primal Bite, a bite attack in bear form that replaces the Mangle ability from Season of Discovery, but without its signature bleed effect.

In the Feral Combat talent tree for druids, a new talent has appeared — Primal Bite. It's a melee attack in Bear Form that costs 20 Rage and casts instantly.

The talent sits in the fourth tier and requires Savage Fury. The ability can only be used in Bear Form or Dire Bear Form.

The talent was added in patch 1.60.1 — the version under which the World of Warcraft: Forever beta is currently running.

Where the talent came from

Primal Bite is essentially a rework of the Mangle (Bear rune) ability from Season of Discovery. Players familiar with SoD will recognize the same skill: it uses the same internal ID. In Season of Discovery, the Mangle rune applied a special bleed effect on the target, boosting damage against it.

In Forever, the developers decided to drop this debuff — which is exactly why the ability was renamed Primal Bite. It remains a quick rage spender for the bear tank, but it's no longer a key element of the whole group's rotation.

In practice

• For bear tanks. Primal Bite gives steady Rage spending between your main hits and fits well into your threat-building rotation: 6 seconds of cooldown and 20 Rage — that's two or three regular swings to "feed" the bite again.
• Damage without a group buff. Unlike SoD, where Mangle kept a group-wide damage-boosting debuff on the target, Forever removed the bleed effect. This doesn't break anything for a tanking druid, but the group no longer gets a damage bonus on your target — don't count on it in dungeons and raids anymore.
• Where to get it. The talent is taken in the fourth tier of Feral Combat, with Savage Fury already taken as a requirement. Without Savage Fury in the tree, it won't unlock.
• Form restriction. The ability only works in both bear forms: in Cat Form or humanoid form you can't use it.

What this means for you

If you already play a bear tank druid on the Forever beta — head to the fourth tier of Feral Combat and check if Primal Bite is available for you: it'll become your main way to spend Rage in bear form. If you remember Mangle from Season of Discovery — don't expect it here: the signature group debuff is gone, only the bite remains.
