In the World of Warcraft: Forever beta, players discovered that the new Skyborne race, split between the Alliance and the Horde, can write to each other in Darnassian — the common elven language.

The new Skyborne race in World of Warcraft: Forever is formally split between the Alliance and the Horde — High Order Skyborne (Alliance) and Windshaper Skyborne (Horde) are considered enemies. But in the beta, players have already found a way to chat across the faction line: just switch to Darnassian, and someone from the enemy faction understands you perfectly.

What players actually found

On the Classic WoW sub-forum, beta tester Odin_69 posted a screenshot of a chat with another player: both are speaking Darnassian in the chat window, even though one is a High Order Skyborne and the other a Windshaper Skyborne. Switching languages works both ways, and the same applies to regular Night Elves: all Skyborne currently know Darnassian, and that's enough to talk across factions.

Why this works at all

Skyborne start as a single people and only later split into two warring branches. Apparently, the shared starting language set is exactly what kept Darnassian on the list of languages available to both sides. It's a quirk of this specific elven race: humans, orcs, gnomes, and tauren haven't shown anything like this in the beta so far.

Bug or feature — the main question

It's still unclear whether this is intentional. Blizzard has traditionally held firm on the boundaries between the Alliance and the Horde and doesn't want to blur them — that's how it was in the original WoW and in later branches. On the other hand, open cross-faction chat gives plenty of room for roleplay and breathing life into the world, which is exactly what Forever loves. There's no word from the developers at the time of publication — only player observation.

What this means for you

• If you plan to play a Skyborne, keep in mind: you'll be able to chat with the opposing branch through Darnassian. This works right now, in the beta, no addons or tricks needed.
• If you're counting on strict faction boundaries — be ready for the elven race to become an exception: either as an intentional mechanic, or as a bug that gets fixed by release.
• For roleplayers, it's a gift: for the first time in a Classic branch, elves have a 'shared' language that doesn't get cut when you pick a faction.
• Keep an eye on blue posts and hotfixes during the beta: that's where you'll find out whether Darnassian stays common to Skyborne after the November 4, 2026 launch.
